Myths, legends and folklore

Like any island, Fuerteventura has its own myths and legends - all part of the folklore passed down through generations.

Only some myths and legends keep getting a fresh life with new sightings, new reports, new mysteries ...

Could Fuerteventura really be part of the Lost City of Atlantis? What about those strange dancing lights? And that mysterious island that keeps appearing and disappearing out of the sea mists?

Click on the panel on the right to find out more about Fuerteventura's myths, legends and folklore. One myth we can dispel though ...

Heading towards Corralejo from the airport, you can’t fail to notice a huge, red volcano – Montana Rojo.

myths, legends, folklorePeer upwards and at the top, you will notice a small cross.

Many legends surround this cross.

Some say it is where the pirate Jaban who invaded the island in 1593 is buried.

Other say it is the burial spot of a kindly old lady who watches over the island protecting it.

The truth is rather more mundane. The cross at the top of the mountain is there because – it marks the top of the mountain.
