Museums on Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura has a number of museums reflecting its old traditions and past. And they are not all full of stuffy old relics ...

La Alcogida Museum

Near Tefia is La Alcogida, a small village has been turned into an eco museum giving aAlcogida museum glimpse of how islanders used to live before tourism arrived.

This settlement of seven dwellings, typical of the traditional architecture in Fuerteventura, recreates country life as it was by showing craft work and farming activities.

Just after the Second World War, a seven year drought halved the population as islanders left in droves because of the shortages brought about by the lack of water. There are no such problems these days as desalination plants provide all the water the island needs.

This village museum recreates real traditional country craft and includes pottery making, weaving, bread baking and cattle and farming techniques. As you enter the village you are given a magic stick which enables you to receive a commentary in your chosen language as you stroll around the village and meet the inhabitants who "work" there.

La Cilla Museum of Grains La Olivia

This house dates back to 1819. Here you can learn the history of traditional farming cycles, old measurement units and examine old agricultural tools that used to be used as well as learning about different grains and how grain farming developed.

Betancuria Museum

This museum is in the old street of Roberto Roldan in a traditionally styled house in the old part of Betancuria.

The house has been restored and is now a museum with five exhibition halls. It includes scale models and texts about the first European expeditions to Fuerteventura, the natural resources of Fuerteventura, archaeological pieces and traditional wares.

Los Molinos Windmill Museum

In a traditional house in Tiscamanita, this museum provides information about the grinding instruments used throughout the island and  visitors can see how the windmill outside the house, traditionally used to make the gofio-toasted cornflour, works.

Unamano House Museum Puerto del Rosario

The museum is located in the former Hotel Fuerteventura where the Spanish writerUnamano museum Miguel Unamano stayed during his exile on the island.

Visitors can see rooms and objects that Unamano used as well as some of his pictures and texts.

Dr Mena's House  Museum

The house which is the site for this museum was left by Dr Mena to his heirs and is now known as the Casa de los Alfaro.

It stayed in the family until 1999 when the island council bought it to turn into a museum and it has been decorated with typical items from a large county house of that period.
