Gran Tarajal is one of the largest towns on Fuerteventura and one of the
most important non-touristic areas.
Gran Tarajal was built up around a port from
were once, all the island's tomatoes were shipped. Today, though, they are
mainly exported through Puerto del Rosario. Gran Tarajal town The town itself steps back up the sides
of a steep valley and from the harbour, it's possible to see almost all of
the streets and alleyways of this bustling town. Many of the roads are steep
and There is a lovely 20th century church built besides shady palms and a beautiful fountain with six sea horses. Gran Tarajal itself is built at the mouth of the Rio Gran Tarajal although this is dry most of the year. Gran Tarajal has all the infrastructure of a major town and there are a number of fairs, concerts and events held throughout the year. Shopping in Gran Tarajal There are a wide range of shops in Gran Tarajal but beware this a a typically Spanish town and apart from the restaurants, shops end to close in the afternoon for siesta.

It is packed full of local restaurants which pay little lip service to tourism - just the place to try a little authentic Canarian cooking.
