Free plant scheme Fuerteventura

For some years Fuerteventura has been giving away free plants to encourage planting on the island and reduce soil erosion.

Residents are entitled to up to 40 free plants. To claim them, you need you NIE number and proof of address but residencia is not required and you do not have to own the property you are living in.

The plants can be claimed by taking your documents along to the Centro Insular de Informacion office by the Centro Bibliotecario Insular building next to the library in Puerto del Rosario.

You will be shown a book with the types of plants available and a form to note down which pants you want and how many of each species.

It is not necessary to take all 40 plants. You can just take as many as you want. The form will be stamped and handed to you with a map of how to get to the nursery in

The plants are only small and will take some years to develop. Many on offer are varieties of trees with a root system suited to combating soil erosion.
