Although appearing mountainous, Fuerteventura is actually a low-lying island
and therefore the humidity contained in the trade winds does not materialise
as waterfall. This coupled with years of overgrazing as led to an arid land with mainly desert and semi-desert flora. A decline in agriculture is slowly seeing a return to the natural state but the direct action of man is now affecting vegetation. The vegetation of Fuerteventura is in general limited to three plant formations. The Canary Islands Spurge (cardonal de las medianias) makes its home in the semi arid infra-Mediterranean. The wild olive tree (acebuchal de las cumbres) grows in the semi arid thermal Mediterranean. The balsam spurge is a native on the hyper arid infra thermal Mediterranean bioclimatic floor. The thorny scrub is the most populous on Fuerteventura. Saltbrush, tabayba and other semi-desert species can be found. There are other types of vegetation which have adapted to either soil with high water content (edaphohydrophilous) or for the lack of water (edaphpxerophilous) The best example is the Canary Islands tamarisk (tarajal canario) which prefers moist, saline soil.
