| With volcanic sea
beds sinking as low as 3,500 metres and an abundance of fish, the waters off
Fuerteventura are a deep sea fishing paradise. Over recent years, Fuerteventura has become identified with deep sea fishing - so much so that an annual deep sea fishing competition is held in September every year from Gran Tarajal. As a result of the sea currents, the sea beds around Fuerteventura are home to a wide variety of fish including marlin and swordfish. Traditionally, fish like blue and white marlin, rays, sharks and spear fish are released after being caught. The coastlines around Costa Antigua are renowned for the quality of its deep sea fishing.

On a
day's deep sea fishing it is normal to see flying fish and turtles.
On your way out to the fishing to the fishing spot, you will undoubtedly stop to pick up your bait - usually sardines caught using a large net. Organised deep sea fishing trips usually include lunch, safety lessons and a chance for a spot of sunbathing. Some will pick you up from where you are staying otherwise you will have to make your own way to the harbour. In Caleta de Fuste, ask around the harbour or one of the locals. In Corralejo, deep sea fishing trips leave every day Monday - Saturday from 8.30am-2.30pm. Call (0034) 928 867 000.
