Costa Calma was a latecomer to the tourist scene despite its amazing
beaches. A purpose built resort, its first hotel went up in the 1970s but it was not until the road from the capital Puerto del Rosario to Morro Jable was completed in the early 1980s and Costa Calma was hooked up to the electricity network that the resort really took off. Costa Calma - the calm coast - is, ironically, ringed with wind power generators that stand out spectacularly on the hills overlooking the resort. It is now a modern resort lying about 80kms from the airport at the tip of Jandia national park It is a pleasant, clean resort, lined with greenery, Canarian pines and palm trees. Costa Calma is very much geared up to the German market with most bars and restaurants displaying signs in German and

on entertainment aimed at the German holidaymaker. There are over
8,000
hotel beds in the resort but few British operators go there. The resort of Costa Calma is long and spread out and there is no real central area although there are a number of shopping centres with bars and restaurants to serve the surrounding hotels. The built up areas are separated by strips of greenery and trees. The long sandy beach of Playa Barca has to be its jewel in the crown. Even during the peak season you can find a private spot and windsurfers flock there for the strong off shore summer winds. There are plans for more shopping centres and even a marina has been proposed.
