| A car tour of the
centre of Fuerteventura
will take you along spectacular mountain roads and
end up in a little fishing village. Oh - and don't forget to take some
pistachio nuts, stale bread, some water and a small container to put it in
.... The tour starts at Caleta de Fuste, a lovely resort which is worth exploring and more can be found out about this on the Caleta page. Head north along the main coast road until you come to an island with a sign post for Triquivijate on your left. This long straight road resembled an airport runway as it charges across the plains by passing Triquivijate (worth stopping off at for a wander around) where one of Fuerteventura's top rated restaurants is. Along with three other restaurants on Fuerteventura, it won the coveted star status award in 2006.
Back into Antigua town and follow the signs for Betancuria. This will take you up a mountainous road with a number of viewing points not least of which is one on the left which has an observation centre the Mirador which towers over the road. After stopping for photographs, continue into Betancuria - the former capital of the island -with its imposing church. The mountain road continues after Betancuria again with stopping points for photographs. At many of these, wild chipmunks will scurry around looking for your attention! They adore pistachio nuts - don't bother shelling them, they do that themselves - and will literally come and eat out of your hand providing a perfect photo opportunity. The stale bread is for the various species of birds that live in this wilderness and hover looking for bits the chipmunks might have missed. And when you depart, leave behind a small container of water - they don't get much up there! The journey continues into the centre of Pajara. once voted the 8th prettiest village in Spain.

As you past an old, typical and impressive Canarian house on your right, look for the turning on your right to Ajuy. At Ajuy, you can park on the beach and enjoy the impressive cliff top walk. Most holidaymakers follow the main path to the Mirador. But having seen that, on your way back, you can go left uphill and lead the tourists behind taking the impressive upper cliff top path to a large "Arc de Triumph" that stands into the sea. Following the road back out of Ajuy, there
is a lovely picnic
spot set in an oasis of palm trees. Ajuy is also the nearest village to
the ship wreck of
the American
Star. If you want If not it is back to Pajara but this time, at the junction, instead of turning left back to Betancuria, turn right down it's main street lined with roses - certainly an unusual sight on Fuerteventura and which reminds you more of England! On the route back to Caleta de Fuste, you can either turn left at Tuineje and head back through Antigua or extend your journey and continue straight on into Gran Tarajal and then take up part of the southern route visiting Las Playitas and, on the way back, Pozo Negro where an old guanche village was recently discovered and restored.
