those soggy muddy trails - mountain biking in Fuerteventura is a
completely different experience The landscape is probably unlike anything you have seen – a bit like cycling on the moon, as one enthusiast said. But as you will see, it certainly grows on you. And that is why mountain biking is extremely popular. Get off the main roads and on to the countless dirt track roads that are passable with care and you will find scores of little deserted beaches and a peacefulness you won’t find in many places. You can either bring your own mountain bike or hire one from one of the shops in your resort. Trails are mostly dry, dusty and demanding but fun and you probably won't see another mountain bike on the tracks Hire a jeep if you want to get to the huge volcanic hills in the centre of the island. but there are various trips organised by many of the local mountain bike companies. Breathtaking downhill mountain bike runs can stretch to 30 minutes on this landscape. Plan your trip to experience lunch stops in villages that tourists don't find. It's not a mountain run as such but one of the most unforgettable routes is to take the road from Caleta to Antigua then Pajara and Ajuy. After taking in the spectacular mountain walk, cycle back out from Ajuy to the main road turn left then try and find the dirt track that takes you down to the ship wreck of the American Star. It is a truly amazing sight. |
