A visit to
the white village of El Cotillo is highly recommended whether you
are a sun worshipper or water sports fanatic. A laid-back village which is becoming more cosmopolitan, blue lagoons and wild golden beaches with waters perfect for windsurfing, surfing and fishing. If you are looking to escape for the day, El Cotillo is the place to come. On the beach and in the village there are open air restaurants and kiosks. The beach is quite safe at the lagoon (east) side but there are notorious undercurrents in the seas on the cliff side especially during swells. El Cotillo is surrounded by a number of beaches like El Aguila, Esquinzo, Jarubio and El Agibe de la Cueva, a two kilometre beach which is dwarfed by the Betancuria massif and which is the largest beach along this coast. Typically these beaches rest at the foot of a cliff at the base of ravines. Golden and sandy with waves, the deserted feel of El Cotillo appeals to many and the area is particularly popular among windsurfers and surfers. In the opposite direction towards the Toston lighthouse, there are little coves of white sand such as Caleta del Marrajo and Caleta de la Aduana ideal for picnics.

The adventurous can explore the rugged, bumpy road The North Track which runs between El Cotillo and Corralejo which leads to a number of beaches ideal for surfing – a four wheel drive is recommended! Beware though – mobile phone signals do not reach some areas. The area has plenty of room for naturists. Buses run from both Puerto del Rosario (the number seven) or from Corralejo (number eight) on a regular timetable.
